Step by Step SharePoint 2010 Install RTM

Here's my steps for installing SharePoint 2010 (RTM):

DOMAIN CONTROLLER – CONTOSO-DC

  1. Start
    Hyper-V Manager on a 64bit server
  2. Click
    “Action->New->Virtual Machine”
  3. For
    Name, type “503xx-Contoso”
  4. Click
    “Next”
  5. For
    memory, type “512”
  6. Click
    “Next”
  7. Select
    a local connection, click “Next”
  8. Select
    a location, ensure that the size is set to at least 127GB
  9. Click
    “Next”
  10. Click
    “Next”
  11. Click
    “Finish”
  12. Right
    click the virtual machine in Hyper-V, select “Settings”
  13. Set
    the number of processors to “2”
  14. For
    the IDE Controller 1, specify the “Windows Server 2008 R2” iso
    1. Click
      “Browse”
    2. Select
      the iso
    3. Click
      “Open”
  15. Click
    “Ok”
  16. Start
    the Virtual Machine
  17. Install
    Windows Server 2008 R2
    1. Click
      “Next”
    2. Click
      “Install Now”
    3. Select
      “Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (Full Installation)”
    4. Click
      “Next”
    5. Click
      “I accept the license terms”
    6. Click
      “Next”
    7. Click
      “Custom (advanced”)
    8. Click
      “Next”, windows will install
    9. Click
      “Ok”
    10. For
      password, type “Pa$$w0rd”
    11. Type

  18. Set
    the IP settings

    click “Computer”, select “Properties”
  21. Under
    computer name, click “Change settings”

    “Yes” to restart
  27. Logon
    as administrator with password Pa$$w0rd
  28. Open a
    command prompt, run dcpromo, setup a domain called “contoso.com”
    1. Click
      “Next”
    2. Click
      “Next”
    3. Select
      “Create a new domain…”
    4. Click
      “Next”
    5. Enter
      contoso.com, click “Next”
    6. Select
      “Windows Server 2008”, click “Next”
    7. Click
      “Next”
    8. Click
      “Yes, the computer will use…”
    9. Click
      “Yes”
    10. Click
      “Next”
    11. For
      password, type “Pa$$w0rd”
    12. Click
      “Next”
    13. Click
      “Next”, active directory will set itself up
    14. Click
      “Finish”, click “Restart Now”
  29. Login
    as Contosoadministrator with password “Pa$$w0rd”
  30. Create
    the following domain users, set their password to “Pa$$w0rd” and that the
    password doesn’t expire.  NOTE: you
    can download the setup script from http://instructor.architectingconnectedsystems.com
    1. Click
      “Start->Administrative Tools->Active Directory Users and Computers”
    2. Expand
      contoso.com
    3. Select
      “Users”, right click and select “New->User”
    4. For
      name and user logon, type sp_admin
    5. Click
      “Next”
    6. For
      Password, type “Pa$$w0rd”
    7. Uncheck
      “User must change…”
    8. Check
      “Password never expires”
    9. Click
      “Next”

      “Off” for both administrators and users

      “Go to Windows Firewall”

Installing SQL Server 2008 R2 PowerPivot – SharePoint 2010

I wasn't a fan of the first installer, and am still not a fan of the current installer.  It works great if you are doing a new Farm, but unforunately, when you already have a Farm, it doesn't work right.

The various errors include the fact that you have to know what permissions need to be assigned to the Analysis Services instance, what account to install under and a not so simple thing in that the ConfigurationFile.ini on the "install" step is WRONG!

It still thinks you are trying to do a new Farm install and randomly picks a port for the Central Administration site!  Hmm…who codes this stuff???  You have to edit the file to set the port properly for Central Administration.  You should also set the TCP and Netbios setting to "1" while your are at it.

Windows Identity Foundation 4.0 SDK

I ran into a problem with trying to run the latest samples of the WIF.  I'm building a cool LiveID example with SharePoint 2010.  The examples wouldn't run because ASP.NET 4.0 was not installed. 

HTTP Error 500.21 – Internal Server Error
Handler "PageHandlerFactory-Integrated" has a bad module
"ManagedPipelineHandler" in its module list

Similar to the old days, you have to run the aspnet_regiis -i command from the C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v4.0.30319 directory

SharePoint 2010 Looping Workflows

The beta and RTM versions differ just a little bit when it comes to looping workflows.  In beta, it simply would have killed your steps after the first workflow.  But this one will determine that it needs to stop after the second workflow fires.  After that, you will get this in the ULS LOG files, question to test/ask yourself, how far can you go before SharePoint 2010 doesn't know a loop is happening?:

SharePoint Designer 2010 – Reusable Workflows – Associate to List feature

If you build a re-usable workflow and click the "Associate to List" feature without first publishing it you will get an ASP.NET error on the addwrkfl.aspx page.  The error is an Object Not Found NullReference error.  You would think that you would get a nice SharePoint error dialog box, but not in this case.  This could be a confusion point for your users.

The sandboxed code execution request was refused because the Sandboxed Code host Service was too busy to handle the request

That's quite the error right?  In just about every farm I have setup so far, I am getting this error: "The sandboxed code execution request was refused because the Sandboxed Code host Service was too busy to handle the request"

I haven't quite figured out exactly what the problem is, the ULS logs don't help much, they simply give a IPC error.  I have double checked everything.  Not sure what happened in RTM that changed from BETA.

I have seen the ACL fix, but that's for a domain controller.  Even applying the fix, it still won't go 🙁

Full Farm Backup SharePoint 2010

In walking through our course labs one more time, I found that when backing up the Farm in "Full" mode, if you cannot resolve the various service applications through the web service WCF services, the entire backup will pause on "In Progress" indefinitely. 

I found that when uninstalling Office Web Apps, you will be left with an instable farm.  One side effect is that your services will start failing and will be set to "Stopped".  I noticed that several of my Windows Services are not  starting autmatically for some weird reason (no, its not a password and yeah, I can see the DC).  Even after setting them back up property and starting the services, the backup would never fully continue.  I have yet to find a resolution!!!

SharePoint 2010 Prereqs – Installation Failed restart required – Windows Servicing failed

So I was upgrading my development environment to SharePoint Foundation 2010.  Unfortunately I ran into a stopping point.  The pre-req installer would go into a loop!  It would make it to the part of configuring the IIS Application Role and then fail.  The failure would say that a reboot is required.  When the server rebooted, it would start again, and as you can guess, repeat in failure and require a restart!  Yuk!

In the Event Log->Setup, you will see where the install successfully made it too.   You'll see that various roles are being installed and setup.  You just need to manually add those roles and features.  In my case, it was getting stuck on:

  1. Application Server (MSMQ, activation services, etc)

I simply fired up the Server Manager and manually installed each until I got to the root of the problem.  I figured that possible I needed to add the server to a domain but that didn't help.  After 3x, the server manager will give up.  The problem was that the .NET TCP feature wasn't happy.  Why, have no clue.  I had to remove IIS and .NET 3.0 and then run the pre-req installer.  After that, it all went smooth!
